We are often asked how in the world did a cookie baker end up on a garden show?  The short answer is that two passions collided.  Before I get to the story, let me tell you that the Toby Tobin you hear on the radio is the real Toby.  He is as friendly, helpful and knowledgeable in person as he sounds on the air.  I swear that he has a photographic memory.

     Several years ago Toby & EJ were working out (ironic isn't it) while watching Kansas City Live with Darren Mark who happened to be at our bakery that day.  Darren had just tried one of our Chocolate Chip Cookies (which he was reluctant to try as he is a self declared cookie snob) and was explaining how the heavens opened up for him.  I have a short video of that for you to see.

     Toby and EJ decided they wanted to taste for themselves what the fuss was about.  Several phone calls later they found out they could order a sampling of cookies and have them delivered to their house saving them a 30 minute drive.  Now I have listened to Toby for more years than I want to admit, but none of us made any connection or had any idea how our life was about to change.  Three hours later they had our cookies and they were about to rock our world. 

     The next day we were working at the Junior League Holiday Mart (a very large high end shopping event) when all of a sudden people came up to us and asked if we were the ones on the radio.  We said no, but they started giving us details about our cookies, how they tasted and our $6 delivery anywhere in the metro area.  Long story short Toby spent 15 minutes talking non stop about our cookies.  Oh my gosh, you would not believe the calls we received. 

     Later that week after we recovered we sent them a gift basket thanking them for rocking our world and told them what our week had been like.  Toby called back laughing and asked if I wanted to come on the show with him after Thanksgiving.  Toby did what he does to guests and we now:

• Create a brand new cookie every Season (not easy), Toby has a simple standard:  it has to be worth driving clear across town for.

• Special hours on Saturday,

• Expanded our line of chocolates to include nuts

• Now sell gourmet cupcakes. 

     On a personal note Toby has helped us at home for many years, but his new website has kicked it up to a whole new level.   You can now go to his website for Monthly Tips about your lawn, garden and pest control.  We just recently followed his advice on ant control (Spectracide Triazicide with spreader sticker) and even with all the recent rains we no longer have any ants in the house.

     Lastly, if you are obsessive about your lawn, check out Toby's tips on lawn care.  Many of the tips are simple and contrary to what we have been told for years by the corporate giants, but they work. 

     One thing that I can say without any doubt at all is that Toby is as passionate about lawn, garden and home care as we are about cookies, chocolates and cupcakes and I can't say that about very many people.  Check out his website and listen to his show Saturdays 6 am - 10 am on 980 KMBC, you never know what you might learn!
